Portal Eyes of the World

A little over a year and a half ago I was approached by Pat and Jeannie Wilshire to create a new work of art to help promote IlluxCon 9, the gathering of artists and professionals begun by the two of them which has become a go-to place to jump start and maintain a career in the fine arts of science fiction and fantasy.

Needless to say this is not a project I could undertake lightly. Not only do you wish to impress a client of such stature in the collecting field as the Wilshires, but the eyes of every artist in the genre may fall upon such an image as well as that of countless other professionals, art directors, collectors, and fans. I could not deliver a mediocre work for such a commission and all the burden fell upon my shoulders, for Pat and Jeannie gave me free rein to produce anything which I deemed appropriate in subject matter, mood, or content.

Give us your best, they said, making it sound like this was a freeing of the artistic process. But what damning pressure such words can be! I could blame no other person or aspect of the commission if it resulted in failure.

With this hanging over my head, I spent months processing through what content could be a signature representation of my work, as well as hold its own with hundreds of professional artists gazing at it, and work as an advertising image which could reach out to fans and speak to people outside of the genre. Give us your best started to sound more like dont blow this Donato, we have the world riding on you!.

Let me make clear, the Wilshires did not request any of these conditions for the art, they just wanted a nice painting to showcase at the event, and have been wonderful clients to work for. It is I who has generated all the stress in this project!

Luckily, some how, I was able to pitch a few concepts to Pat and Jeannie which seemed to hit many of these notes. I was never sure if these images could indeed speak to so many audiences, but being a professional artist I knew I had to place my best foot forward and try.

The final results were a surprise and great relief and hopefully exciting for my clients. Every major commission sends shockwaves through my artistic being, and somehow I find a way to pull through each time, alive and hopefully better off. I have to credit my years of service as a book cover illustrator meeting deadline after deadline, and diving into content I was unfamiliar with, for providing me with the testing grounds so that when major projects like these come up, I have a method and approach which helps me stay the course through the greatest of challenges.

PrivateX hacker group defaces Office of Vice President site again

Hackers struck twice on New Years Day, defacing another government website on Sunday evening and calling anew for "information security" but this time, also appearing to taunt its target.

The PrivateX group defaced the Office of the Vice President site before 9 p.m. Sunday, hours after hitting that of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.

In Sunday evenings hack, the hackers embedded a video clip of a news item quoting Vice President Jejomar Binays spokesman Joey Salgado as denying the OVP site had been hacked sometime last year.

At the time, Salgado was downplaying a hack of the OVP website, saying the OVP was merely transferring to a new host.

"Months had passed when we first wired our sentiments and growing passion of concern to intensify the Information Security here in the Philippines. Occupants of the west are still on the move and in no such time, Manila, will be the center of unethical activities in Asia. For some reasons that is untold, they choose the Philippines to organize a legion that will nullify the entire Philippine Cyberspace," the group said Sunday night in the message on the defaced OVP website.

As in the defacing of the PNRI website, PrivateX "assured" that "nothing was lost during the process of this defacement."

Cue from Philkers?

Sunday evenings hack appeared to be more elaborate than the defacement of the PNRI site earlier in the day.

While the PNRI hack redirected visitors to a page containing its message, the hack on the OVP involved changing the text on the title bar to "Pr1vX" and placing the text of its message directly on the OVP website.

The OVP website attacked by PrivateX last July, with the group asking at the time that it not be associated with the hacktivist groups Philkers and Anonymous. — ELR, GMA News

Pirates of Silicon Valley History of Black Bill Gates

About 6 months ago, I accidentally watched a slick movie titled Pirates of Silicon Valley. Movies made in 1999, this TV station is showing Cinemax on a night of boring. Perhaps, this film was the real story of his career Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Overall, this film recounts the competition between Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs. But Steve Jobs is the founder of Apple Computers famous product with the Ipod and Macintosh.

In addition, the film also recounts many of the personal nature of each of the famous figures. Steve is very emotional, the excess demand loyalty from their servants. Steve programmer forced to work for 24 hours non-stop. When he found programmer is sleep, then Steve is not reluctant to call the programmer. Opposite from Steve, Bill Gates described as a simple, shy and polite. "

Plainly, this film made me understand more deeply about the history and development of the computer course is the second figure. This film also recounts the history of how controversial the DOS operating system and the history of GUI (Graphical User Interface).

Believe it or not, in fact DOS is a registered trademark created by Bill Gates on an operating system (OS) that he purchased from a programmer who did not know his name. Point of Vision Women in Fantasy Art

I want to share another project with you guys, one Im really thrilled about. Irene Gallo of Tor and I have co-curated an exhibit at the Society of Illustrators, and the opening is this friday. If youre in the NYC area, you should totally come out!

The exhibit is the first retrospective of Women Artists in Fantasy and Science Fiction. And what an amazing group of artists it is! We not only have the industry legends like Kinuko Craft, Julie Bell, and Rebecca Guay, we also have the newer generation of women artists, like Rovina Cai, Karla Ortiz, Cynthia Sheppard, Tara McPherson, and more.

I was honored to get to write the press release for the show, and it explains why we picked the title "Point of Vision" — because women artists have a very different point of view when asked to translate the common themes in fantasy and science fiction, and its absolutely amazing to see all that work together for the first time. The exhibit takes up the entire first and second floor galleries of the Society and its just awe-inspiring.

Point of Vision: Celebrating Women Artists in Fantasy and Science Fiction

When people think of the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre they often think of it as a male-dominated field, both in authorship and art. However, women have always been a critical part of the genre, and have often brought a slightly different point of view to the way that they create around the themes of myth, heroism, science, and futurism. Mary Shelley wrote one of the first, if not the first science fiction books in Frankenstein. For every Tolkien there was an Ursula K. LeGuin. For every Frank Herbert an Octavia Butler. When we think of Science Fiction and Fantasy Art, it is often the names like Frazetta and Hildebrandt that come first to mind. However, all along through the art history of the genre you have women such as Kinuko Craft, Mary Blair, Julie Bell, and many more who have been creating their own visual worlds and illustrating the worlds of authors, filmmakers, and game designers. For the first time, the work of women in this genre will be exhibited together in Point of Vision: Celebrating Women Artists in Fantasy and Science Fiction at the Museum of Illustration at the Society of Illustrators.

We have chosen to exhibit these women artists together to propose that although both men and women have always created art in the worlds of Science Fiction and Fantasy, women inherently have a slightly different point of view, a unique way of internalizing the themes and stories and then creating visuals imbued with their perspective. However it would be a mistake to say that art created by women is automatically “feminine” — in this exhibit the viewer will see that there are as many different definitions of “woman artist” as there are women creating art.

This generation of Science Fiction and Fantasy fans have made a mission of greater inclusion in the genre, in books, comics, films, and gaming. There are more women fans than ever before, and they are seeking out and highlighting the women creators that have always been involved, but perhaps slightly outside the spotlight. At the Society of Illustrators we are proud to be exhibiting not only the established icons of the genre, but also showcasing the new generation of women artists working with fantasy themes. As you’ll see from the exhibit, many of these women enjoy playing with the genre standards that their forebears defined, and take a fluid approach to not only the genre, but the crossover between illustration and fine art.

This exhibit is curated by Irene Gallo and Lauren Panepinto.

An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, June 10th.

I was honored to write the introduction a few years ago, and it got me originally thinking about many of the recurring themes that many of the women in both the book and the show wrestle with in their art. I have been very fortunate to be involved with so many amazing projects with the Women Artists of this community, and they are such an inspiration to me. I cant wait to celebrate all of you at the opening friday!

Phishing For Suckers of the Mac User Variety

Over the past couple weeks, there has been an all out effort to phish-for-suckers, especially Mac user suckers. I received one of these phishing emails myself!

Here is what it looks like:

How To Detect Phishing URLs

Using Apple Mail, the quick and easy way to check if the link in a suspect email his bogus is to hover your Macs cursor over the URL found in the email. The result is that the ACTUAL URL appears on screen. Then you can see if they match. If they dont, you know youre being Phished. Here I have applied this method to the Phishing example above. Click on the image to enlarge it for viewing:

Here you can see the cursor hovering above (not clicking on!) the link in the phishing message. The yellow box appears below your cursor, containing the ACTUAL URL hidden beneath the FAKE URL. In this case I can see that the fake link does NOT go to Apple at all. Instead it goes to some unknown server in another country (.nl refers to the Netherlands). Ive grayed out most of the actual link for your protection.

When you discover a secret URL deviating from and hidden behind a fake URL label, you know youre being phished. Needless to say, DO NOT click the phishing link!

How Are Secret URLs Hidden Behind Fake URLs?

Here is the HTML command being used by the phishing rats:

"<A HREF="URL" TARGET="_blank">TextOfLink</A>"

Ignoring the coding details, there are two important parts of this command:

1) The actual URL. I have placed the word URL above where the actual URL is placed into the command. For Apple, that could be "http://www.apple.com", placed within the quotes.

2) The Text Label For The URL. I have placed the phrase TextOfLink above where the text label is placed into the command. For Apple, that could simply be Apple without quotes.

Where this command becomes dangerous is through the use of a URL as your text label. This is allowed! Its clearly a fault of HTML coding. For example, instead of using Apple as the text label I could use anything I like, such as http://www.CuteLittleSquirrel.com. In this example, someone would think they are going to CuteLittleSquirrel.com but theyre actually being sent to Apple.com.

Here are a couple code examples:

Real:
You can visit Apple by going to http://www.Apple.com!

Phishing:
You can verify your Facebook password by going to http://www.Facebook.com!

The Real link really goes to Apple. But the Phishing link does NOT go to Facebook! In this example, it also goes to Apple. But I could make it go ANYWHERE on the Internet I liked, while still fooling you that it goes to Facebook.

When you arrive at a phishing website, it has been setup to appear to be real. This can be done by stealing all the graphics and design of the original website, such as Facebook, then uploading it to the faked phishing website. It looks like Facebook! But its NOT Facebook. Having suckered you there, the phishing rats can then ask you to LOG IN to your account. You log in, you believe. But they have just stolen your ID and password. Youve been successfully phished.

Phishing websites can ask you ANYTHING. Whats your birthday? Whats your credit card number? Whats your cards secret code? Whats your maiden name? Where do you live? Etc. If you hand them the data, they abuse you. Typically, peoples identities are sold to other rats who want to steal from you or pretend to be you for nefarious purposes. Thats bad.

Purported press image of iPhone 5C appears online

While the purported iPhone 5C, Apples low-cost iPhone, has made several online appearances, including in some really high resolution pictures and videos that surfaced on the Internet, a website now claims to have published the official press shots of the phone.

Romania based publication, Mobilissimo.ro, claims that a Romanian retailer sent a couple of press shots of the iPhone 5C to the website.

The press photo features the White coloured variant of the iPhone 5C running iOS 7.The front panel is also in White unlike some previous leaks, while the back of the phone features the same plastic polycarbonate body panel that appeared in recent leaks, in glossy White, complete with a round camera lens and LED flash, Apple logo and iPhone branding.

The left-hand side of the phone features the same pill shaped volume rocker and mute keys that had appeared online, in a recent leak. These are also White in colour.

In addition to the press pictures, the site has also posted images of what the Romania-based dealer claims as iPhone 5C dummies placed in shop shelves till the actual phone arrives. The dummy features a White plastic power button. At the bottom of the dummy phone, theres a small hole for the second microphone, next to the 3.5mm headset jack port, two screw holes with the Lightning connector port at the centre, and four holes for the speaker towards bottom right. This is in line with the pictures that appeared recently on Sonny Dicksons website.

Its interesting to note that the low-cost iPhone has leaked several times but the pictures were of pre-production units and did not feature cut outs for the power and volume rocker keys.

Other alleged pictures of the iPhone 5C have revealed a plastic polycarbonate body back panel in White, Blue, Red, Yellow and Green colours. However, weve not heard much about the specifications of the phone till now.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5C along with the iPhone 5S, the next generation iPhone, on September 10 at an event in San Francisco. Its worth pointing out that Apple has not sent any invitations or announced an event officia. [via]

Pic of the day the process of De decorating

All the ornaments ready to get packed up, in the boxes I have stacked in the front bedroom. I dont know if thats a word or not..but Im not de-cluttering, Im just taking away the nice Christmas decor that I had so carefully put up just a few short weeks ago :-( and packing it back into the boxes. I really have sooooooooo much holiday decor that I could if I want too, put all different stuff out next year. But I still have to sort through it and decide what I really really want to keep. Figure the snow themed things will stay with me ....Snow, its just such a part of me, growing up in Buffalo, and my nickname for Paul was "my snowman" ;-) Well, time to get back to my de-decorating.

Think maybe Ill leave the tree up one more night and enjoy the lights

Just when you thought it wasnt possible to come up with any more variants on the zombie theme, up pops Plants vs. Zombies.

In Plants vs. Zombies you have to protect yourself from a "mob of fun-loving zombies" intent on invading your home. Your only defense is a collection of 49 lovingly-tendered, zombie-zapping plants. These are no ordinary plants though - they can use an array of weaponry from peashooters to cherry bombs to destroy the 26 types of zombies before they reach your front door.

The different zombies each have their own skills and abilities so each will require a different tactic to defeat them. Obstacles such as a setting sun (which make your flowers close up), flower-eating frogs and other hazards add to the drama. There are five game modes to choose from, namely Adventure, Mini-Games, Puzzle, Survival and Zen Garden. The range of zombies is truly impressive - from Bucketheads to Bobsleigh zombies that require a different plant to kill them off.

While each scenario is essentially all the same - stopping the zombies crossing the garden - there is enough variation between levels to make Plants vs. Zombies a really good laugh. Each level you win means you win a new arsenal of plants to play with and you can collect sunflower seeds as currency with which to buy more for particularly difficult levels.

Plants vs. Zombies is a Tower Defense-style game with plenty of character, humor and action, making it much more fun that it might sound at first.

Quantum of the Seas balcony stateroom tour

During our short weekend trip on Royal Caribbeans Quantum of the Seas pre-inaugural sailing, we stayed at a superior ocean view balcony stateroom. These rooms are typically about 198 sq ft in size in addition to a 55 sq ft ocean facing balcony. Our cabin is room 228 located on deck 10 (10228).

The room comes with a large king size bed, shower room, a large Samsung TV, numerous storage space, a desk with two USB sockets, a telephone and sofa. Our room also has a connecting door to the adjacent cabins, which can be formed together as a family connected junior suite with a single large balcony. My grandson and I enjoyed watching the sandhill crane couple walking by this morning in my yard. Usually they are around almost daily, but I hadnt seen them since a couple days before Christmas - I must have a couple hundred photos of them already....but thought that this pic was especially nice with the gray of the trees, their feathers, the green foliage and their red heads...kinda Christmasy and all ;-)
